What This Extension Does

Climate Risk – California is a browser extension that displays educational climate risk information for California properties when you browse supported real estate websites: Zillow, Redfin, Realtor.com, Trulia, Compass, and Homes.com.

Data We Process

When you visit a property listing page on a supported website, the extension reads the property address from the browser URL bar. This address is used solely to look up climate risk information from public government data sources. The extension does not scrape or modify the content of any real estate website.

Third-Party Services

To retrieve climate risk data, the extension sends property coordinates (latitude and longitude) to the following public APIs:

  • Cal-Adapt (api.cal-adapt.org) — California climate projection data, operated by UC Berkeley
  • CAL FIRE (services.gis.ca.gov) — Wildfire hazard severity zones, operated by the State of California
  • OpenStreetMap Nominatim (nominatim.openstreetmap.org) — Address geocoding to convert a property address to geographic coordinates
  • FEMA NFHL (hazards.fema.gov) — National Flood Hazard Layer REST API, operated by FEMA; returns both current flood zone and Future Conditions (FC-FIRM) data

No personal information (name, email, browsing history, or account data) is sent to any of these services. Only geographic coordinates are transmitted.

Data Storage

Climate risk results are cached locally on your device using Chrome's storage API to avoid redundant API calls. Cached data expires after 30 days. No data is stored on any external server.

You can clear cached data at any time by removing the extension or clearing extension data in Chrome settings.

Data We Do NOT Collect

  • No personal information
  • No browsing history
  • No analytics or tracking
  • No cookies
  • No user accounts
  • No data sold or shared with third parties

Permissions Explained

Permission Purpose
storage Caches climate risk results locally on your device for 30 days to avoid redundant API calls
sidePanel Displays climate risk data in Chrome's native Side Panel without modifying any real estate website
activeTab Reads the URL of the currently active tab to detect supported property listing pages
tabs Monitors tab navigation so the badge and side panel update automatically as you move between property listings. Only the URL is accessed — no page content, titles, or history
notifications Displays a one-time notification on first install prompting you to pin the extension to the Chrome toolbar. No further notifications are sent
Host permissions for supported real estate sites Required so the tabs API can expose tab URLs for those sites. The extension reads URLs only to detect property pages and extract addresses — no page content is accessed or modified
Host permissions for API domains Required to fetch climate risk data from Cal-Adapt, CAL FIRE, FEMA NFHL, and OpenStreetMap Nominatim
